Cell at MWCentre Barcelona

C E L L is an interactive installation commissioned by Alpha-ville for the 2011 festival and created by Keiichi Matsuda and James Alliban.

This interactive installation plays with and proposes alternative landscapes in the technological ether surrounding our everyday movements.

As our identities become deliberately constructed and broadcast commodities, our projected personae increasingly enmesh and define us. Cell acts as a virtual mirror, displaying a constructed fictional persona in place of our physical form. Composed from keyword tags mined from online profiles, these second selves stalk our movements through space, building in size and density over time. The resulting forms are alternate, technologically refracted manifestations of the body, revealing the digital aura while simultaneously allowing us escape from our own constructed identities.

CELL is a project about online identity. In the post-digital paradigm, we define ourselves through deliberalty constructed profile pages, blogs and home pages, but also through status updates, links, connections and associations. In a world where our identities are quantified, commodified and constantly recorded, the artists are interested in how this way if defining ourselves may start to trap and limit us. The artists call the cloud of linked personal information the DIGITAL AURA. CELL acts as virtual mirror, exposing our online personas in place of our physical form. It’s a bridge between the virtual and physical worlds, and proposes a future where our digital auras are inextricably linked to us.
